I am continuing a series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the #nursing community. This series we are focusing on our Be-Attitudes, those attitudes we need to cultivate to win business and life. I wanted to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. Dr. Wayne W. Dyer wrote in The Power of Intention,
Say the word intent or intention repeatedly when you’re in a state of anxiety or when everything around you seems to have conspired to keep you from your mission.
This is a reminder to be peaceful and calm. Intention is spirit, and spirit is silently blissful.
Reminding yourself of your intentions keeps you focused on the present. Anxiety is often a projection into a future that is not real. It is the anticipation of something unpleasant happening. I talk to my clients about not projecting negativity into their future. If you think about failing and set your mind there, that is where your actions will want to take you. Job is speaking in Job 3:25 (KJV), “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” I wonder, why was Job afraid of calamity? Why was he fearful? Why was he not at rest even before his trial?
Do we focus too much on the negative voices which tell us we can’t prosper, we aren’t good enough, or we don’t measure up? I am not saying deny reality. I am saying let’s set our intentions when those negative voices appear. I am not good enough to play the piano in front of an audience, but my intention is to practice every day to become better. I blew it today and let my anger get the better of me. My intention is to apologize, find out why I blew up at everyone, and address the situation head on through the process of self-discovery or healing. I messed up and cheated on my diet. It is my intention to be more careful with planning so that I won’t be tempted again. I will pack my lunch instead of relying on take-out. Stay in peace. Don’t beat yourself up but prop yourself up through the power of being intentional.
Philippians 4:8 (KJV), “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” What are you thinking about and how may you set your intentions?
“Positive thinking is a valuable tool that can help you overcome obstacles, deal with pain, and reach new goals.”- Amy Morin
Today, I want you to write down your top 3-5 intentions that will help you further your mission. Put it somewhere you can see it every day. Make it a habit to say it out loud daily and whenever you feel like negative thoughts are pulling you away from your goals. Here is an example, “I intend to map out my calendar for June, July, and August by May 31, 2024.” It is my intention to put important dates and tasks into my phone as reminders so that I will not miss deadlines.”
Nursing News
School nurses are worried about losing their jobs as pandemic relief funds dry up according to an article in USA Today, “Kate King, a school nurse in Ohio and the president of the National Association of School Nurses, said that while it’s tough to pin down how many nurse salaries come from pandemic relief money, she has been hearing from nurses in districts across the country who are worried about what’s to come.” You can read more about this here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2024/05/24/school-nurse-jobs-maybe-in-danger/73715549007/
