Starting and growing a business as a nurse entrepreneur is exciting but also challenging. To keep your business thriving over time, you need to focus on career growth. Career growth is not just about climbing a ladder; it’s about building skills, connections, and a personal brand that supports your business goals. When you invest in your growth, your business gains strength and longevity.

Let’s explore practical strategies that can help you grow your career and business at the same time.

Skill-Building for the Future

As a nurse entrepreneur, your clinical skills are your foundation. But to succeed in business, you need more than clinical knowledge. Expanding your skills in several areas will prepare you for the future.

Clinical Certifications

Staying current with clinical certifications shows your commitment to quality care. Certifications like wound care, diabetes education, or telehealth nursing can open new doors. They also build trust with clients and partners. A nurse entrepreneur that I had the privilege to meet is using her certification as a perinatal nurse to create her own coaching business for new moms.

Business Education

Understanding business basics is key. Learning about marketing, finance, and operations helps you make smarter decisions. For example, The Nurse Shark Academy offers courses that teach business skills tailored for nurses. These courses cover everything from writing a business plan to managing cash flow. You can check out the business courses here.

Soft Skills

Communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential. These skills help you manage your team, negotiate with vendors, and connect with clients. Practice active listening and clear communication in every interaction. As a psych nurse, I utilize the skills of empathy and motivational interviewing. These skills translate very well into business activities.

Building these skills takes time, but each step makes your business stronger and more adaptable.

Networking with Purpose

Networking is more than collecting contacts. It’s about building meaningful relationships that support your growth.

Connect with Healthcare Professionals

Join nursing associations, attend healthcare conferences, and participate in online forums. These connections can lead to referrals, partnerships, and mentorship. Connect with professionals in other disciplines such as pharmacy, rehabilitation, massage therapists, and the like to build a broad community of healthcare colleagues.

Engage with Entrepreneurs

Look beyond healthcare. Join local business groups or entrepreneur meetups. Learning from others who run businesses can give you fresh ideas and support. Join your local chamber of commerce or small business associations. Online platforms such as LinkedIn and Alignable are another great way to meet people. Check out my Alignable and LinkedIn pages here.

Use Social Media Wisely

Platforms like LinkedIn are great for professional networking. Share your journey, insights, and successes. Comment on posts and join groups related to nursing and entrepreneurship. Be aware of what you are posting and how it may be perceived by others. Keep it professional and classy when representing your business.

The Nurse Shark Academy hosts networking events that bring nurse entrepreneurs together. These events are a great way to meet peers who understand your unique challenges. You can find upcoming events on the events page.

Personal Branding for Visibility

Your personal brand is how people see you and your business. Building a strong brand helps you stand out and attract clients.

Create a Consistent Online Presence

Use LinkedIn, Alignable, Instagram, or whatever social media platform that has your ideal audience to share your expertise and connect with others. Post regularly about your business journey, nursing insights, and lessons learned. Although I post regularly on different social media accounts, I have found that my best audience for The Nurse Shark Academy is found on LinkedIn and Alignable.

Speak at Conferences

Presenting at nursing or business conferences raises your profile. It shows you are an expert and builds trust. Look for conferences that you can use to allow your expertise to shine. For example, in my core business, I work with attorneys on their legal cases. I speak on educational forums directly to attorneys.

Share Your Story

People connect with stories. Share why you became a nurse entrepreneur and what drives you. Authenticity builds loyalty. If you want to hear my story about becoming a nurse entrepreneur, you can listen to Season 1 Episode 1 of The Nurse Shark Academy Show. Getting your message clear helps the listener connect with you. That's when the magic happens.

Personal branding takes time but pays off by making your business more visible and trusted.

Work-Life Integration

Running a business and managing personal wellness can feel overwhelming. Finding balance is essential for long-term success.

Set Boundaries

Define work hours and stick to them. This helps prevent burnout and keeps your personal life healthy. I schedule everything, including my down time, which I like to designate on my calendar as my "Glorious Purpose" time.

Prioritize Self-Care

Schedule time for exercise, hobbies, and rest. Taking care of yourself improves your energy and focus. Every month I schedule a massage. Every three weeks, I get my nails done. It is my time to unwind and unplug.

Use Tools to Stay Organized

Apps for scheduling, task management, and finances can save time and reduce stress. My calendar app has been a game changer. I am no longer chasing down appointments or double booking time. I give the person the option to choose a time best for their schedule and it frees up my time.

Remember, your business depends on you. Taking care of your wellness is an investment in your business’s future.

Growth Is a Lifelong Process and Investment

Career growth doesn’t stop once your business is up and running. It’s a continuous journey of learning, connecting, and adapting. By building your skills, networking with purpose, creating a strong personal brand, and balancing your life, you set yourself up for lasting success.
