Be-Attitude: BE FOCUSED

I am continuing a series for our newsletter to include a leadership topic along with passing along news in the #nursing community. This series we are focusing on our Be-Attitudes, those attitudes we need to cultivate to win business and life. I wanted to focus on the positive in nursing and leadership. Subscribe to receive notification when our newsletter comes out. We publish twice a month.

When I think about staying focused, I think of my niece, Asia Means. Asia spent most of her time focused on her studies and getting into nursing school. Although she participated in social activities and leadership programs, she remained focused on her goal of attending nursing school, even when the original school she was planning on attending last year reneged on its scholarship offer due to lack of funding. She found another school that is closer to home, a smaller campus, and was better suited to her needs. She is flourishing. She remained focused on her goal of attending nursing school. Is it any wonder I call her my mini-me?

My question to you is, can you stay focused in the face of disappointment? Starting a new career, launching a business, or tackling a new project will challenge you and often life throws a distraction at you at the same time. I was recently driving home from work the same route I take most days, and I was distracted by a semi-truck and missed the off ramp. I had to go to the next exit and take a more scenic route home. Although it took more time, I was able to appreciate the new scenery but I continued to my destination. I didn’t drive to a new home or suddenly decided that I had moved. I adjusted and continued to my initial destination. I became more focused on my surroundings. If things don’t go the way that you planned, are you able to adjust and stay focused on your goal? Henry Ford said, “Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” Are you keeping your eyes on the goal?

Stay on course

Jim Donovan in  What are you waiting for? It’s your life,

When things don’t go the way you want, it’s your level of commitment that is tested. If your commitment is strong,  you will get through whatever is happening. Whether you’re in a new relationship, starting a business, or want to lose a few pounds, the same principle applies. You must be totally committed if you want to succeed.

Your Be-Attitude: Be Focused.

An Iowa nurse has been criminally charged in the death of a resident for refusing to suction the resident. According to the article in the Iowa Dispatch,

Becky Sue Manning, 69, of Lake View, is charged with felony wanton neglect of a health care facility resident. According to prosecutors, Manning, a licensed practical nurse, refused repeated requests to provide physician-ordered care for a resident of the Fonda Specialty Care nursing home while working there in 2023 as an employee of the GrapeTree Medical Staffing temp agency.

It was noted in the article that Manning was the only nurse on duty. According to the report, she was allegedly told she did not have to perform trach care when she accepted the assignment. The resident in question had to be suctioned frequently. The facility was cited as well.

There are many questions about this story. Was the nurse properly trained?  Why was there only one nurse on duty?  Was respiratory therapy available?
